Chapter 40: Surrender of Pinaki and Parashu

P goes to Shiva to ask him the other half gurudakshina. Shiva says that he has to become Brahmin again and uphold its destiny. P accepts and surrenders the Bow (Pinaki) and Parashu. Shiva asks P to give Pinaki bow to either of his 2 devotees Ravana or Mithila Naresh aka Janaka Maharaja. P first sets foot to Lanka.

Meanwhile, a saint is caught not following Ravana’s orders (that of chanting Ravana's name during yagna oblation) and hence is brought to court. When the saint stands his ground, Ravana asks why? Ravana is the grandson of sage Paulak and son of sage Visharbha. Saint says that just by being born to sage doesnt mean he is a sage himself. His deeds alone decide whether he is sage or not. Saint says that saint knows the body is temporary and hence he is not afraid of death. Ravana orders soldiers to kill him. At the same time P enters the court and is shocked to hear this verdict as he thought Ravana was a great man. Although Ravana is born to a sage father his mother is an asura and hence Ravana has imbibed the asura qualities.

Ravana is overjoyed to see P and grants him any wish. P asks saint’s life and Ravana graciously sets saint’s life free. But P is disappointed in Ravana and hence does not give the Pinaki. He leaves Lanka to Janaka’s place.

On his way, he meets Shravan and blesses him the luck when he sees Shravan carrying his parents in a weighing pan. P reaches J’s palace and surrenders the weapons, thanking them too.

Dasharath thanks P profusely for the bow. He asks what is life's biggest lesson and P says that doing good deeds is the only best thing in life. Thus saying, P departs to become a Brahmin sage again.

End of P’s life story.
