Chapter 53: Education to Rama & bro

Rama and bro are “ideal” children. All bros look upto Rama. Raja guru gives them a small test. All pass. So all have to go to Ashram. Raja and wives are sad, but have to let them go for studies.

Education is very important. Hence although Dasharath and wives are unwilling to send their wards away, Rama and bro go with Rishi Vasisht to obtain knowledge.

Rama asks guru what is dharma. Guru says - Dharma (righteousness) is a combination of all virtues. The viture that takes mankind, humanity and morality to its peak is dharma. It motivates life. Karma (deed) is life, very existence. It can be good and bad. Difference is - good deed gives peace of mind and makes you happy. Bad deed is one that makes the soul unhappy.

Vasisht informs disciples qualities of ideal student -
1. Determination of a crow
2. Focussed
3. Light sleeper
4. Eats less
5. Sacrifices home.

Parvati asks Shiva why education is important to Rama since he is lord Himself. Shiva replies that Man follows ideals and thats why Vishnu took form in Man so that he can be that ideal. He has to go through all processes of mankind. Vishnu has to teach Man how to lead life, how to undergo joyousness, sadness, etc. Ram teaches life in its simplicity.

The 4 princes even refuse royal food. Manthara gets something spl to Bharath. Manthara shout at Rama for not allowing Bharat to have good food. Lakshman tries to throw stone at Manthara. Rama stops him and tells that students should not resort to stone-throwing since Saraswati doesnt like it. He asks L to ask sorry to Manthara. L does so. M goes away.

Raja and wives visit ashram to see their sons on the pretext of arranging upanayanam. They see Rama is practicing ‘arrowing’ with help of hearing sounds (blind folded). When teacher keeps rustling leaves in front of his body and asks Rama to shoot, Rama refuses saying he can hear the guru's voice just behind the rustling leaves and if he shoots, he will kill the teacher too. So Rama has become expert at blind folded shooting.

D remembers his act and the curse. He comes and tell Rama that he will try his best to let his Rama away from him - physically or emotionally.

Meanwhile, Ravana’s wife is unhappy because her children are taught only how to fight. But they are not educated. ‘Brawn without brain is dangerous’ she says to Ravana who as usual ignores her. Her grouse is that Ravana is an intelligent scholar and shrewd but his sons are not. The children are uneducated warriors - they dont know who they are fighting and why. They dont know their destination.
