RG apologises and tells the story: He once had a beautiful wife called Ahalya, who was a devoted wife and good company. Each day he used to do sandhyavandanam at dawn. Indra’s eyes fell on her because of her beauty. So he requested ‘Chandra’ (God of moon) to disappear at night so that it will be dawn and at the privacy of Ahalya, Indra can have pleasure. Chandra refused but he was told to obey orders.
Reluctantly Chandra did so. Perplexed on hearing birds’ chirping very early, Gautam and his wife woke and Gautam was off to the river to do sandhyavandanam. Indra transformed into Gautam’s guise and presented himself before Ahalya, who was surprised and asked what happened.
He told “I was absorbed by your beauty and could not concentrate and so I want you.” Perplexed although Ahalya was, because Rishi was supposed to have sacrificed all pleasures of life, she gave herself away to Indra thinking he was her husband.
Meanwhile, Chandra, much stricken by his illegal act, reappeared and Gautam realized that it was still night. So he returned back to find his wife cozy with another guy impersonating him. Upon knowing that it is Indra, he cursed him to lose lust for all women in future and cursed his wife to become a rock, although she was innocent albeit being impure.
And so, says Gautam, I have repented since cursing her for now I am suffering from loneliness and I have no answer as to why I irreparably cursed her. Sita says she has the answer: Rishi thinks low of women and he doesn’t respect their values. And so, she, Sita, doesn’t respect him and is not willing to get her education from him and she walks off. Gautam is much grieved.
Meanwhile, Dasharath secretly keeps visiting Rama to see his upbringing.
